Inspection of installation is do be done prior to every use. However, as summer reaches its peak, it’s the perfect time to pause—not just to relax in your hammock, but to go through a thorough inspection to ensure that your setup is still as safe and secure as the day you installed it. At Hammock Universe, your comfort and safety are our top priorities. That’s why we encourage all our customers to regularly perform in depth inspections of their hammock and installation—whether you're lounging under the backyard maple, swinging between palm trees at the cottage, or relaxing on your porch.

Here’s a simple guide to help you inspect, verify, and refresh your setup so you can enjoy the rest of the season with complete peace of mind.

1. Inspect Your Hammock Fabric

Over time, exposure to sun, rain, and general use can take a toll on the material of your hammock. Whether you own a cotton, polyester, or Mayan-style hammock, here’s what to check:

  • Look for fraying, tearing, or weakening of fibers, especially around the areas that carry the most weight (center, ends, or loops).

  • Check for mold or mildew, especially if the hammock has been exposed to moisture and not stored properly.

  • Test the tension by gently pulling along the fabric to ensure it hasn’t lost its strength or elasticity.

If you notice any damage, it may be time to consider a replacement or repair before it becomes a safety issue.

2. Examine Your Hanging Hardware and Supports

Your hammock is only as secure as the structure that supports it. Mid-summer is a great time to verify that everything remains strong and stable.

  • Tree straps: Ensure they haven’t slipped, stretched, or sustained wear. Check for any fraying or damage due to weather or wildlife.

  • S-Hooks or Carabiners: Look for any signs of bending, rust, or weakening. If you’ve used a vise or tool to close a hook, make sure it hasn’t compromised the structural integrity.

  • Chains and Extension Straps: Confirm they’re not overstressed or corroded.

  • Stands: If you’re using a metal or wooden hammock stand, check for signs of rust, warping, or instability. Make sure all bolts and joints are tight and rust-free.

3. Evaluate the Installation Points

  • Trees: If you’re hanging between trees, check that both trees are still healthy and stable. Look for cracks, disease, or dead limbs that could fall.

  • Posts or Beams: For porch or indoor setups, inspect for any movement, cracking, or instability in your mounting points.

  • Level Ground: For freestanding hammocks, make sure the base is still on firm, level ground that hasn’t shifted or softened.

4. Review Weight Limits and Usage

Summer often means more guests and more use. If your hammock has been seeing extra love this season:

  • Revisit the manufacturer’s weight guidelines (listed in your product’s manual or on our website).

  • Be cautious about children jumping or swinging in the hammock.

  • Avoid exceeding the limit even temporarily—it puts stress on both the hammock and its attachments.

5. Storage and Protection Tips

Even though it’s mid-summer, it’s a good moment to plan ahead:

  • Use a UV-protective spray like Scotchgard Water and Sun Shield to reduce fabric fade and wear.

  • When not in use for extended periods, store your hammock indoors or use a breathable cover to shield it from the elements.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for care, cleaning, and storage. This extends the life of your hammock and maintains warranty coverage.
